Thursday's Theme - {Handles, Pans & Cans}

Little by little, the mountain of stuff in my workshop is becoming a more manageable molehill.  I have cut way back on going to auctions and thrift stores, with the goal of doing something with all the stuff I already have to work with.  Last week, my focus was on turning broken old chairs into useful things (HERE, if you missed it), this week I focused on finding new uses for old wooden handles and pans and cans.

 Recently, I bought a set of 3 old bread pans that had really pretty patina on them.

  I added two of them to the antique chair leg salvage that I showed you earlier in the week, but I still had one more I could do something with, and I remembered Jane @ Mamie Jane's potato masher tote, and decided to make a variation on it, with my one remaining bread pan.  I like that I can either set it on a counter or hang it on the wall.  I use several old bread pans in my kitchen already, to hold spice bottles and seasoning packets, so I knew I would get plenty of use out of this one.

I just drilled four holes at the bottom of the pan, then twisted a piece of wire from inside the pan, around the potato masher stem to attach it.  The basket rests on the flat part of the potato masher, so no other support was needed.

I like that the old potato masher is useful while on display now.

I had another old red wooden handle from some kind of tool. I've been trying to figure out what to do with it, because I love the handle.  I rummaged through my junk tool box and found a metal piece with a hook at the end - again, no idea what it was from, but it fit inside the handle perfectly.  So, now I had a hook "thing" attached to it, but still didn't know what to do with it.  I tried several ideas and none of them were quite right, but I spotted an old fluted tin (brioche tin?) on my kitchen shelf.  It seemed like a good match for another wall hanging "basket", so I drilled a hole in the bottom of the pan, inserted that into the hook part, then used E-6000 to glue the hook stem to the pan.  

It looks pretty with some fresh pine greenery in it, but would

make a nice spot for candy or some herbs in it, to hang by the kitchen window.

The last project I worked on was this quirky wall basket.

 I had an antique bike pump with this wonderful wooden handle.
I racked my brains trying to figure out what to do with it, and was ready to throw in the towel and give up.  I just couldn't figure out what I could possibly put on it, which really bummed me, because I love the handle.

I made one last scavenging trip through my workshop and found this old coffee can.

Several years ago, I added a scrap of burlap to it, and a little piece of window screen, then tore the word, "Grow" out of an old schoolbook to add to the screen.  BINGO...it was exactly what I needed!

 It is totally quirky, but I really like it.  I think it would be cute hanging by a kitchen or entryway window, to grow herbs year-round.  It's available HERE.
